Irons or Hammers?
|
If pushed are we the Irons or the Hammers? One more than the other? Intuitive response works best.

Both is the intuitive response. Come on you irons! I like the use of irons, because you know it's rootsy, but if I were referring to a fellow West Ham supporter, I'd say he is a Hammer. I could say he's an iron, but that can be misunderstoood.

I always loved the legend that is "Play Up Hammers!" from the 1923 cup final footage.

Actually, going back, I do often call fellow supporters Hammers, but I'd more than likely just say "He's West Ham."

It's to do with context, circumstance and the individual concerned.

Yeah, but having considered all that, unless it sounds like you're calling someone a poof, it's 'Irons'.
'Hammers' is for newspaper headlines.
